Agrarian Mountain Home

in Afton

Nestled into the Blue Ridge Mountains just outside of Charlottesville, the residence embodies a balance between rustic agrarian character and modern functionality. The home was intentionally designed to appear as if it had always been a part of the land — the use of hemlock siding and a Corten steel roof, which beautifully weather with time, establish an authentic, enduring presence. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping 270-degree views of the mountains, ensuring the surrounding landscape is a central element of daily life.

Inside, the home reveals a warm, eclectic spirit. Layers of collected antiques from High Point Market, hand-carved doors, Turkish runners, and bohemian décor seamlessly blend with modern conveniences such as radiant-heated floors and a back kitchen. The great room is anchored by an glass-walled art studio that connects visually and spatially to adjoining rooms through sliding barn doors, maintaining light flow and family connection.

The residence was strategically designed to accommodate both multi-generational living and aging in place. A lower-level private suite with its own entrance and a private suite above the garage offer autonomy for the homeowners’ adult children. Wide circulation paths and a step-free main level ensure accessibility, creating a forever home that can adapt across generations. At every turn, this agrarian mountain home tells a story of purpose, connection, and enduring design rooted in both family and place.
