Seaside Retreat

on the severn river

HIDDEN AT THE END OF A ROAD, surrounded by native grasses, hydrangea, and wildflowers, this cheerful Caribbean-blue cottage is an enchanting tidewater home called “Open Air” by its owners. Designed for a couple ready to enjoy their retirement years, the home accommodates extended family entertaining as well as tranquil moments of solitary repose. A transitional house in two ways; the cottage was conceived for a simpler lifestyle and the iconic traditional exterior frames a more contemporary interior. An open plan and few stairs allow ease of flow while broad swaths of glazing flood the expansive spaces with light and capture the views. A sunlit cupola floods natural light into the main level, which supports the owners’ aging in place via an open floorplan, no long hallways and an elevator to the lower level.  The ground floor offers its own allure, including a roomy bar, sitting area, and guest suite perfect for entertaining. The waterfront elevation also provides ample covered and sunlit seating, a firepit, and the pool deck for gathering and activity – all comfortably ensconced in the terraced landscaped hillside that eventually leads to the water’s edge. The plantation shutters, custom millwork, and oval windows lend charm and sophistication to this lovely place.
