Team I BELIEVE EVERY HOME CAN REFLECT WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE FAMILY THAT LIVES WITHIN IT. IT IS HUMBLING TO BE ENTRUSTED WITH THEIR DAY-TO-DAY EXPERIENCE. Cathy Purple Cherry, Founding Principal GROUNDED IN HER FAITH and driven by a passion for art and architectural design, Cathy Purple Cherry has been honing her craft since early childhood. Painting lessons at a young age led inevitably to her later studies at the Corcoran School of Art, University of Colorado, Boulder, and at the University of Maryland. Since graduating with her architecture degree in 1989, Cathy is resolute in her quest for excellence in residential design. Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors, Cathy’s namesake firm, embraces advanced technologies and new materials in their custom designs for luxury residential architecture. Energetic and creative, Cathy is a natural leader and she relishes the problem solving inherent in architectural design. Warm and thoughtful, she gathers and processes information that informs the big picture as well as all the subtleties. She considers lifestyle as much as aesthetics. A wife and mother of three—her eldest is a special needs child—Cathy deeply understands the desire for a dream home that is not only beautiful, but which also supports the values and needs of her clients. A visionary and three-dimensional thinker, she is able to turn aspirations into built reality. While she revels in the intricate design opportunities presented by high-end residential architecture, Cathy is equally passionate about her philanthropic efforts. She and her firm offer their design knowledge and... When we’re designing a house, we also talk about technology. Services Experience, Expertise, & Accountability ARCHITECTUREThe design of exceptional homes—from 3,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet and everything in between—requires thorough understanding of each client’s needs and desires. Our design team appreciates that individual aspirations are shaped by a lifetime of experiences. We encourage our clients to create virtual idea boards to help us capture preferences and inspiration. Equally important to establishing the vision are site and context. We have extensive experience in designing for waterfront and mountain properties and understand how to utilize the sun’s path, views and wind to determine proper siting and maximize design. Experts in comprehensive estate planning, we bring deep and specialized experience in complex master site planning efforts. Moreover, with LEED accredited professionals, we have a keen interest and ability to integrate sustainable strategies into the design of clients’ homes at their request.   TECHNOLOGYAdvanced technology is woven into the design process and strategy at our firm. We use Revit for design development and construction documents. The use of 3D modeling and visualization allows our clients to quickly see the nuances of structural massing and volumes. The technology also benefits the contractor, establishing clarity of alignments and relationships from the beginning of construction. Beyond serving as a design and informational tool, our emphasis on technology and the use of 3D models underscores our effectiveness and efficiency.   INTERIOR DESIGNIn support of the company’s residential architecture, the Purple Cherry interior design studio provides seamlessly... While these considerations are important, we believe designing a home for longevity goes much further. A truly timeless home should be able to evolve alongside the people who live within it. For our clients, that can mean designing a residence that accommodates young children today, welcomes adult children home decades from now, supports aging parents, prioritizes health and wellness, and ultimately allows the homeowners themselves to age comfortably in place. It is not simply about designing for later in life. It is about considering how a family may live in a home for the next 30, 40, or even 50 years. Functional Floor Plans Designed for Every Stage of Life One of the most important aspects of luxury aging-in-place design is creating a functional plan that supports accessibility. We consider how spaces, circulation, entrances, bathrooms, and everyday functions may need to adapt over time. Our role as architects and interior designers is then to solve those needs beautifully. Accessibility should feel inherent to the architecture rather than something that has been added later. A first-floor primary suite, generous circulation, an elevator, minimal thresholds, thoughtful lighting, appropriately designed bathrooms, and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions can all make a home easier to navigate as its owners age. When these elements are incorporated from the beginning of the architectural... When people think about luxury home design, they often imagine grand gestures—a sweeping staircase, a dramatic vaulted ceiling, or an elegant chandelier that immediately captures your attention. Those elements certainly create memorable first impressions. By Cathy Purple Cherry, AIA, LEED APFounding Principal, Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors When people think about luxury home design, they often imagine grand gestures—a sweeping staircase, a dramatic vaulted ceiling, or an elegant chandelier that immediately captures your attention. Those elements certainly create memorable first impressions. But after decades of designing custom homes, I've learned that it is often the smaller architectural and interior design decisions that homeowners appreciate the most. These thoughtful details quietly improve the way a home functions, enhance everyday living, and create a sense of craftsmanship that never goes out of style. The beauty of these design elements is that many can be incorporated into both new custom homes and luxury home renovations. Individually, each decision may seem modest. Together, they create homes that feel more refined, more intentional, and ultimately more timeless. The Dutch Door: Practical, Charming, and Timeless The Dutch door is one of those architectural features that has remained relevant for centuries because it is equally practical and beautiful. Originally popularized in Holland and the earliest American colonies, Dutch doors allowed fresh air and natural light into the home while keeping children, pets, and livestock safely separated. Today, we often incorporate Dutch doors into luxury homes at mudrooms, laundry rooms, pool houses, or secondary entrances where homeowners want visual connection without unrestricted access. They also present wonderful opportunities to introduce personality through bold paint colors, reclaimed wood, rustic finishes, or elegant fluted detailing. Bring More Natural Light Inside Natural light remains one... One of the most common questions I hear as a custom residential architect is, "Should we renovate our home or tear it down and build a new one?" By Cathy Purple Cherry, AIA, LEED AP | Founding Principal, Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors One of the most common questions I hear as a custom residential architect is, "Should we renovate our home or tear it down and build a new one? " Whether clients are planning a luxury home renovation, considering a complete custom home rebuild, or evaluating the long-term value of their property, the answer is rarely simple. After more than four decades of designing custom homes throughout Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay region, and beyond, I have found that the decision almost always comes down to three primary considerations: budget, the existing home's condition, and the extent of change the homeowners envision. 1. Start With Your Investment Goals Assuming the property is not protected by a historic designation or located within a historic district, the first consideration is financial. Throughout the Northeast, the cost of building a luxury custom home typically ranges from approximately $800 to more than $2,000 per square foot, depending on the level of craftsmanship, architectural detailing, materials, and construction complexity. That benchmark provides an important point of reference when deciding whether to renovate or rebuild. If a homeowner's investment goal falls well below the cost of new construction, a thoughtfully planned renovation is often the logical path. However, this is where expectations and reality frequently diverge. Many homeowners envision a renovation that transforms nearly every aspect of their home within a budget that realistically supports only a portion of those changes. One of... Some landscapes naturally become the heart of a home. Whether it's a quiet waterfront shoreline, a mountain ridge, rolling countryside, or a wooded retreat, the surrounding environment often serves as the emotional centerpiece of the architecture. As an architect, my role is never to compete with that beauty, but rather to elevate it—to frame it thoughtfully and create a home that feels inseparable from its setting. By Cathy Purple Cherry, AIA, LEED AP, Founder, Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors Some landscapes naturally become the heart of a home. Over the course of my career, I've had the privilege of designing luxury custom homes in extraordinary locations across the country. While every property presents its own opportunities and challenges, one principle remains constant: the most successful homes feel deeply connected to their surroundings and authentically tailored to the people who live there. That connection is what makes a luxury home timeless—not simply its architectural style or curated materials, but the way it responds to the land, embraces the views, supports everyday living, and reflects the lifestyle of its homeowners. Building a Luxury Residential Design Practice Rooted in Purpose I founded Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors in Annapolis, Maryland, more than 30 years ago with a simple but ambitious goal: to create homes that are timeless, functional, and deeply personal. What began as a boutique architecture firm has grown into a multi-office practice with a team of more than 40 professionals specializing in luxury residential architecture, luxury interior design, custom home design, renovations, and whole-home design. Today, our work spans the... Historically, the pool house’s main function has been very utilitarian, which could also make it very unexciting. However, the practical pool houses of yesterday have evolved into dreamy structures that now serve as the central hub of modern outdoor living, offering a truly full-service experience. By Brian Milbury, Director of Architectural Design When imagining a traditional pool house, one might envision a practical little structure comprised of a small bathroom or changing room, pool equipment storage, and perhaps a covered seating area. Historically, the pool house served a purely utilitarian purpose, making it one of the least exciting structures on a property. Today, however, the pool house has evolved into something entirely different. In luxury residential architecture, it has become a destination in its own right—a thoughtfully designed extension of the home that serves as the central hub of outdoor living, entertaining, and recreation. More than simply supporting the pool, today's pool houses create a true four-season lifestyle experience that enhances how homeowners enjoy their property. While modern pool houses continue to meet practical needs, they now offer an impressive range of amenities that rival those found inside the main residence. Indoor and outdoor lounge spaces centered around stone fireplaces invite year-round gathering, while conditioned interiors with expansive folding glass walls blur the line between indoors and outdoors. Full kitchens and dining areas comfortably accommodate everything from casual lunches after a swim to elegant farm-to-table dinners with family and friends. Outdoor kitchens have also become an essential component of luxury pool house design. Gourmet grilling stations frequently include built-in grills, pizza ovens, ceramic smokers, refrigeration, beverage centers, and generous prep space, allowing homeowners to prepare meals without ever leaving the outdoor living area. Adjacent fire pits, covered terraces, and full-service bars—whether designed with the warmth... Simple is rarely easy. There’s almost always an underlying effort needed to create architectural designs that are understated and peaceful. Often the results of this effort are intentionally hidden or unnoticed. By: Carmine Cafiero, AIA, NCARB, WELLap, Managing Principal Simple is rarely easy. There is almost always an underlying effort required to create architectural designs that feel understated, peaceful, and effortless. Ironically, the greatest successes in residential architecture are often the ones that go unnoticed. The quiet decisions—the careful proportions, thoughtful alignments, and intentional restraint—are what allow a home to simply feel right. Designing with simplicity is the active pursuit of creating calmness within a home's organization, functionality, and emotional experience. It is not about removing complexity for the sake of minimalism. Rather, it is about creating balance—a balance that feels natural rather than rigid, expressive rather than restrained, and timeless rather than trend-driven. In luxury custom home design, simplicity is rarely defined by a particular architectural style. Whether designing a traditional estate, a coastal retreat, a mountain residence, or a contemporary home, simplicity is always contextual. It is centered on clarity, cohesion, and the thoughtful relationship between architecture, interior design, and the surrounding landscape. Creating that sense of calm requires many different design strategies. Sometimes it is found through symmetry. Other times it comes from repetition, rhythm, or the intentional breaking of a pattern to create emphasis. Simplicity does not necessarily mean unadorned or absent of detail, nor does it suggest excessive ornamentation. It is not purely about form, nor purely about function. The most successful homes balance both, allowing every architectural decision to contribute to a unified experience. It all sounds very serious—and to us, it is. But designing... Learn more about Director of Architectural Design Brian Milbury in this Q&A style discussion about his design journey, the best advice he has ever received, and the five things he cannot live without. 1. Tell us about yourself. I am an architect with a true love for designing beautiful residences. I moved to Annapolis from Chicago, where I ran my own boutique architecture firm for 21 years, producing high-end residential and multifamily designs throughout the U. S. and the Caribbean. My wife Tracie is an interior designer, and we have two children in grade school. My other passions are oil painting landscapes and photography. 2. Tell us about your architectural design journey. How did you get started and how did you get here? I started my design journey in Miami, right out of college, designing homes in the constraints of that unique climate and aesthetic. I then found myself in the Midwest, designing in the more traditional and historic character of Chicago. Over the years, my work has branched out nationally and in the Caribbean, with every coming year bringing a new path, more design knowledge, and deeper experience under my belt. My architectural design journey is always evolving, building on every design I’ve created before. 3. How would you describe your design philosophy? I would describe my design philosophy as rooted in traditional precedent, with a focus on creating updated environments for today’s lifestyles, with open, well-lit spaces that enhance the way my clients live. I believe that experiencing a well-designed space can always make your day better. 4. How do you work with a client to understand their needs? I truly feel it’s important to listen more than you speak. As... Learn more about Director of Interior Design Alexandra Epstein in this Q&A style discussion about her design journey, the best advice she has ever received, and the five things she cannot live without. Alex Epstein, Director of Interior Design Tell us about yourself. I am originally from the suburbs of Baltimore, splitting my summers between the Delaware beaches and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I grew up surrounded by family heirlooms and and my mother’s exuberant flair for maximalism, where “more is more” was never enough! I have a love of bright colors and patterns and strive to bring the same joy into each of my projects. Tell us about your design journey. How did you get started and how did you get here? After earning a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from The Art Institute, I took an internship at a small boutique firm in Baltimore where I was inspired by the historic homes of Roland Park, the preservation of their unique qualities, and the endeavor to be true to their traditional origins. From there, I held roles in the merchandising of showrooms and retail stores and ultimately transitioned to a corporate role, designing for a high-end furniture and fabric vendor. It was during this time that I fell in love with the design process and couldn’t get enough of it! Being surrounded by luxury textiles, avant-garde wallpaper, and more furniture frames to select from than I knew what to do with, I realized my passion was for residential design, where I could bring my knowledge of pattern layering, mixing of scale, and love of color to my clients’ homes. How would you describe your design ethos? More is more, is... Learn more about Director of Architectural Design Peter Guidetti in this Q&A style discussion about his background, his design philosophy, and his sources of inspiration. 1. Tell us about yourself. I am an architect with a passion for the study and practice of traditional, classical, and modern residential architecture. I grew up in the New York City area, met and married my high school sweetheart and have three amazing children. Although architecture touches almost every aspect of my life, my second passion is cooking – I love to share meals with my family and friends! 2. Tell us about your architectural design journey. How did you get started and how did you get here? My architectural journey started way back in the first grade! I saw a picture of the Taj Mahal in a book about India – I remember being captivated by it; I began to draw it and study its shapes and interesting forms. I have continued that process of drawing and studying architecture to this day. I was introduced to the work of Purple Cherry Architects through social and print media. The beauty and elegance of the projects and the visions that Cathy and her team have created inspired me instantly. 3. How would you describe your design philosophy? My design philosophy is rooted in the study of architectural history. I love learning from the masterworks of the past; often solutions for design problems can come from this inspiration. I love the axial arrangements of Beaux-Arts architecture, and because of this I try to incorporate longer and thinner compositions into my design work. It creates connections through rooms and infuses natural light... In architecture, as in life, context is everything. Nowhere is that more evident than in the relationship between a home and the landscape that surrounds it. Whether a custom home sits along a coastal shoreline, overlooks a mountain ridge, nestles into rolling countryside, or occupies a quiet waterfront property, the experience of looking outward from within creates one of architecture's most meaningful emotional connections. By Carmine Cafiero, Managing Principal In architecture, as in life, context is everything. A thoughtfully framed view does more than showcase beautiful scenery—it strengthens our connection to place and reminds us why we chose to build there in the first place. Experiencing a remarkable view enriches the way we live in a home. It shapes our daily routines, influences how natural light enters a space, and creates moments of reflection that often become some of our favorite memories. That is why, as architects, we approach the placement of windows with the same level of intention and care as we would the placement of a piece of artwork. We devote so much attention to designing around views because they are inherently unique. No two properties offer exactly the same experience. The landscape, topography, sunlight, mature trees, water, and surrounding architecture all contribute to making every homesite distinct. Designing for those characteristics creates homes that feel deeply personal rather than interchangeable. Describing architecture in these terms may sound wonderfully abstract—perhaps even like an architect's daydream. In reality, designing around a view comes down to several thoughtful and highly practical considerations. Orientation: Beginning With the Land Every... Selecting interior paint colors is one of the most exciting moments in designing a custom home, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. While many homeowners want to begin with paint, our interior designers often save those final color selections until much later in the design process. The reason is simple: the most successful interiors are built around a cohesive palette of architectural materials, furnishings, lighting, and finishes—not the other way around. Whether you're building a luxury custom home, renovating an existing residence, or refreshing a single room, these seven principles will help you make paint selections that feel timeless, intentional, and beautifully integrated with your home's overall design. 1. Exercise Your Patience. Believe it or not, paint is one of the last interior design decisions we make—and it is usually one of our clients' first questions at the beginning of the design process. Just like you can box yourself into a corner, you can also box yourself into a design by choosing a paint color too early. Selecting an exact paint color before cabinetry, flooring, countertops, tile, lighting, furnishings, and fabrics have been finalized limits the possibilities for creating a cohesive interior. Instead, we prefer to establish the overall feeling and color palette first. Do our clients gravitate toward warm neutrals, soft whites, earthy tones, or richer, moodier interiors? Once the major interior design selections have been made, we have thousands of beautiful paint colors available to perfectly complement the home's architecture and finishes rather than forcing... Designing a custom home is about so much more than creating floor plans. It is a collaborative journey that transforms ideas into thoughtfully designed spaces where families will gather, celebrate milestones, and create memories for generations. For us, architecture has never been simply a profession—it is a creative process rooted in listening, problem-solving, and bringing each client's vision to life. Every project begins with a conversation and evolves through a series of thoughtful decisions that balance lifestyle, architecture, interior design, site conditions, craftsmanship, and construction. Whether you're building a luxury waterfront home, a mountain retreat, a countryside estate, or renovating an existing residence, a successful architectural process is built on collaboration from the very beginning. From the initial inquiry through construction completion, our role is to guide clients through each stage of the custom home design process while providing clarity, creativity, and confidence along the way. Every Great Home Begins with a Conversation The exciting design journey begins long before the first floor plan is drawn. An architect can help with nearly every aspect of designing and building a home—from evaluating potential properties and determining the ideal home orientation to developing floor plans, creating 3D visualizations, coordinating consultants, assisting during construction, and selecting the finishing details that ultimately make a house feel like home. Along the way, architects become trusted advisors, creative partners, and problem-solvers. We help clients imagine possibilities they may never have considered while identifying opportunities and challenges before construction even begins. Initial Introduction & Consultation Every project... By Cathy Purple Cherry, AIA, LEED AP | Founding Principal, Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors Should you hire an architect? It's one of the first—and most important—questions homeowners ask when planning a custom home, major renovation, or home addition. The answer is almost always yes. Few people realize just how complex the design and construction process can be until they're immersed in it. Building a home involves far more than selecting finishes or creating a floor plan. Every project requires balancing zoning regulations, building codes, site conditions, budgets, construction methods, engineering, permitting, and countless design decisions. Like a snowflake, no two projects are exactly alike. Every property presents unique opportunities and challenges, and there is rarely a single, straightforward path from concept to completion. An experienced residential architect is uniquely qualified to help guide that journey. From helping you evaluate a property before you purchase it to collaborating with builders throughout construction, an architect serves as your trusted advisor, creative partner, and advocate from beginning to end. Architects See the Big Picture Architects don't simply design four walls and a roof. They design homes that support the way people truly live. Every decision—from the orientation of the home on the site to the placement of windows, the relationship between rooms, natural light, outdoor living spaces, and interior finishes—works together to create an experience that feels functional, timeless, and uniquely personal. Whether you're building a luxury custom home, renovating an existing residence, adding onto your home, or reimagining a vacation property,... By Alex Epstein, Director of Interior Design Every home tells a different story, which is why there is never a one-size-fits-all approach to interior design. From selecting the right finishes to choosing fabrics, wallpaper, lighting, and furnishings, the sheer number of available products can feel overwhelming. Our interior designers spend every day helping clients make thoughtful decisions that reflect both their personal style and the way they live. To make the process a little easier, we asked our Instagram community to submit their biggest interior design questions. Here are some of our favorites—and our answers. Q: Is wallpaper out of style? It seems like a big commitment. Absolutely not. Wallpaper continues to be one of our favorite ways to introduce personality, texture, and visual interest into a home. Today's wallcoverings extend far beyond traditional floral prints and busy patterns. We are specifying everything from sophisticated linens and grasscloths to subtle textures, bold patterns, murals, and even embossed leathers. Wallpaper is particularly effective in homes with taller ceilings, where expansive wall surfaces benefit from added depth and dimension. It creates warmth while adding another layer to the overall interior design. Don't be afraid to think beyond four walls. We love incorporating wallpaper inside built-in bookcases, behind open shelving, on ceilings, or within niches to create unexpected moments throughout a home. Still nervous about committing? Start with a powder room. These smaller spaces are perfect for experimenting with color, texture, or pattern without overwhelming the home. One of our recent projects featured... By Carmine Cafiero, Managing Principal, Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors One of the biggest challenges homeowners face when designing a custom home or major renovation is imagining the finished result before construction begins. Even the most detailed floor plans require a certain amount of interpretation. While architects are trained to visualize three-dimensional space from two-dimensional drawings, most homeowners understandably are not. That's where technology has transformed the design process. At Purple Cherry Architecture & Interiors, advanced design technology is seamlessly integrated into the way we design custom homes. Using Autodesk Revit®, an industry-leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) platform, we create detailed three-dimensional models that allow our clients to experience their future home long before the first shovel enters the ground. Rather than asking clients to imagine how a home will look, we give them the opportunity to see it. Designing in Three Dimensions Revit allows us to design, develop, and document every project within a fully integrated three-dimensional environment. As the home evolves, so does its digital model. Clients can explore the home's exterior architecture, experience interior spaces, understand room relationships, study ceiling heights, and better appreciate how natural light, windows, and architectural volumes work together to shape the overall experience. This is particularly valuable during the design of luxury custom homes, where proportions, views, and the relationship between interior and exterior spaces are often what make a home truly exceptional. Rather than relying solely on imagination, homeowners gain a much clearer understanding of how the architecture will feel before... ## Portfolio Items Inspired by the client's love of the ocean and outdoors, this oceanfront residence pairs organic warmth with modern detailing. The estate’s structures, which include a main house, guest house, timber-frame entertaining barn, carriage house, automobile barn, pool house, boat house, pottery studio, conservatory, and sheep shed, offer fine architectural detailing and rich finishings throughout, creating a truly magical haven. Highlights include a 40-foot long brick barrel-vaulted dining room with wine cellar and tasting room, three-story chandeliers, and extensive custom millwork. The homeowners, who were uniquely involved in each step of the design process, supplemented the home’s furnishings with an abundance of their own antique and vintage pieces, sculpture, and fine art. The resulting refuge is a true labor of love — designed and built with meticulous planning and attention to detail over the span of five years. THIS CLASSIC shingle-style home presents two traditionally inspired elevations and an interior plan that radiates from an axial center hall. Matching mahogany doors with divided oval windows are a focal point for both the street side and waterfront elevation. The first floor of the home is conceived to flow as an lively entertaining area encompassing the living room, dining room, kitchen, eating nook, and butler’s pantry. Each room is graced with views to the Chesapeake Bay or the lush gardens surrounding the home. Flanking either side of the central hall are a paneled, coffered-ceiling office and a sky lit staircase that provides access to the second floor and guest suite. The finished lower level offers a second guest suite, exercise studio, media room, and an exquisite wine cellar. On the waterfront side of the home, the owners enjoy a deep bluestone porch—heated for all-season use—accented with a seamed copper roof that covers the outdoor seating and dining areas. AN ACCESSORY STRUCTURE for an estate located on five acres along Aberdeen Creek, this timber-framed barn houses the owner’s antique motorcycle and auto collection. The showroom’s polished concrete floor meets full glass French doors connecting to a large waterside terrace and screened porch. A second-floor studio has large retractable glass doors with stainless steel cables that open to the showroom below. The first-floor powder room features stainless steel diamond-plated walls and a vanity fabricated to look like a mechanic’s work bench. The structure also includes a lift bay and workshops outfitted with professional-grade mechanic’s benches and tool storage. Windowed cupolas allow natural light to saturate the interior. Distinctive and charming, the barn also boasts decorative trusses, exposed stained wood, and solid Douglas fir beams. SEASIDE SHINGLE-STYLE merges with Eastern Shore farmhouse refinement to create this sophisticated, art filled four-story residence. A Douglas fir semi-circular sitting room with a fireplace commands a 180-degree view of Aberdeen Creek and the surrounding marshes. A stone and timber-frame pool room also provides a kitchen and a large space for entertaining friends and family. A three-story floating stair stone tower connects all floors and floods in natural light. Other notable features include a heart pine paneled office; a sailboat-inspired library with internal oval windows and a curved beadboard ceiling; a whitewashed semi-circular sunroom with a vaulted radial beams; and a lookout tower with expansive windows on all four sides.   The landscape design includes an outdoor hot tub and a generous grassy lawn on the bluff above the water’s edge. A working orchard defines the land adjacent to the back porch while a large timber-framed barn anchors another edge of the property and provides additional storage, work, and play areas. LOCATED ON A TRIBUTARY of the Chesapeake Bay, this Oxford, Maryland residence appears outwardly grand, but the home is just one room deep. Gently curving along the shoreline, the waterfront elevation features large windows and French doors that provide abundant natural light and striking waterfront views for every room. Designed as a classic Maryland coastal country home, the structure appears to have gradually expanded with new additions over time. This narrative is accomplished with different roof forms and materials, successfully presenting the home as if the center block existed as the original structure on the property. The informal drive and parking court is encircled by the wings of the house.   The interior, while quite large, is rendered intimate through use of special details and delightful millwork. The open kitchen layout and double islands beckon guests to gather around. Soft blues and greens throughout reinforce the relaxed coastal sensibility indoors while the living spaces of the porch and great room extend towards the pool and terrace to create a significant indoor/outdoor entertainment space.   APTLY NAMED “AQUA TERRA,” this home embraces views of Harness Creek and a neighboring vineyard. Form and function converge in the use of expansive glass panels such as a 16-foot foldaway glass wall connecting the kitchen and dining area to a large screened-in porch. Notable features include a three-story metal and wood floating staircase with glass rail; an interior lap pool visible through a glass wall from an interior corridor; a glass enclosed wine cellar, and a magnificent glass cube pool house with fire element. Integration of striking artistic components such as a painted glass interior panel from Israel, a 27-foot custom chandelier, and a custom dining credenza stone top laden with imprints of Goniatites and Orthoceras fossils render a fascinating and unusual interior.   THIS TRANQUIL POOL HOUSE was inspired by the client’s desire to create a meditation space adjacent to the poolscape. The 12-foot by 12-foot glass cube with three distinct climate areas is separated from the outdoor covered dining area by a linear gas fire feature, which is designed to be viewed from both inside and out. The structure stretches the length of the pool, offering a continuous indoor/outdoor experience. It also incorporates the same materials and the overall aesthetic established by the main house. Along the backside of the pool house is a spa-like, glass-tiled shower and changing room connecting to a private outdoor shower.   WHEN NATURE MEETS ARCHITECTURE, it can create a breathtaking experience for the user. And when nature is as stunning as the rolling landscape of Charlottesville, creating an amazing space becomes that much easier. Purple Cherry Architects designed this pool house to provide cover for conversations and dining, a cooking area, a full bathroom, a changing room, and pool storage. The structure tucks against the existing tree line, allowing uninterrupted views from the main house. Importantly, the new building does not obstruct the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the existing home. The building itself is simple. A 20-foot by 40-foot covered area is ideal for large group entertainment and a stone spine along the rear anchors the one large, sloping roof form. Standing on the building’s open corners are two stunning sculptural bronze columns. Simple, yet elegant, hand-crafted bronze railings highlight other areas as well. The Douglas fir paneled changing room features organizing cubbies, hooks, and a bench for visitor use. Further amenities include a concealed roll-down screen for blocking winds and the western setting sun and infrared ceiling-mounted heaters that extend seasonal use. Stone, granite, ceramic tile, mahogany, and patinated metal render this woodland pool house to be both functional and sculptural in its setting. It is a lovely destination on the property.   SITED ON ANNAPOLIS’S SOUTH RIVER, this classical shingle-style residence provides two well-balanced traditional elevations. The gambrel roofs, diagonal divided lites in the windows, capped oval windows, and a large eyebrow dormer create a delightful presence from the street and from the water.  Luxe finishes including a wood shake roof, shingle walls, and copper accents exude a sense of elegance, which carries into the interior. The essence of Annapolis and romance of the sea is reinforced with maritime details throughout the home. Upon entry, visitors are met with a handcrafted compass inlay indicating true north while the extensive millwork—curved beadboard ceilings and built-in cabinetry and bookcases—evoke the character of shipbuilding. Upstairs, the children’s bunk room features boat-themed furnishings and beds complete with portholes. Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors offer a visual rhythm to the length of waterfront elevation, frame the idyllic views, and render a magical light-filled haven for the owners. View more photographs in Interiors LOCATED ON A 13-ACRE parcel in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, the design and construction of this home initially began as a timber-framed space with a kitchen and two bedrooms to support a wedding in the family. However, during construction, the client soon re-envisioned the project as an opportunity to add rooms for family and friends who would frequently visit. Thus the design evolved into three distinct vernacular buildings, two of which are co-joined by a flat roofed glass connector that serves as an art gallery.   The resulting home contains five bedrooms, an expansive kitchen, and a three-car garage. A 46-foot by 23-foot covered porch connects to a vaulted timber-framed great room by an expansive foldaway door that opens completely to the covered porch and panoramic mountain view. Oriented along a steep ridge with a 45-foot drop, the Purple Cherry Architects team devised a striking agrarian-inspired home that is one with the land. A series of cascading terraces connect the house to a lawn intended to accommodate a very large party tent for the upcoming wedding. Reclaimed wood flooring, a standing seam metal roof, and West Virginia stone make this a distinctive mountain retreat. THE TRADITIONAL use of an axial center hall provides a waterfront view from the moment the owners and their visitors open the front door. Inspired by the American Colonial style, the home is articulated throughout with raised paneling, millwork, railings, and wide wood strip flooring. Casually elegant, the connected kitchen, dining, and living rooms are accented with calming shades of turquoise, aqua, and green. At the rear, a large screened-in, slate-floored porch leads to a broad terrace and waterside activity area including the pool, which is bordered by oak leaf hydrangea. Additional amenities are the wine cellar and mudroom, which are connected to the kitchen. Two staircases lead to the second floor, which accommodate five bedrooms and a laundry area. Extensive organizational strategies were incorporated to support a robust household of five. The house also includes a home office and in-law suite above each of the two garages. INSPIRED by the French manor homes of Normandy, this Tred Avon River house is understated and dignified; its granite exterior exudes enduring solidity. While the footprint stretches nearly 128 feet along the shoreline to take advantage of the views, the scale of the house is restrained by steeply-hipped rooflines with flared eaves. The rounded dormers and distinct chimneys are consistent with the French transitional architectural style of the home and unify both the front and rear façades. The waterside elevation, however, includes an abundance of windows to permit natural light and air into the house while capturing the surrounding natural landscape. Meticulous artisanal stonework defines this house as do other rich details. A covered walkway with a mahogany barreled ceiling link the house to the three-car garage with guest suite above; the club room’s custom walnut floor with parquet pattern; the hand-forged antiqued brass railing on the curved stair and balcony; and the timber trusses and stone fireplace of the great room all contribute to the overall character and presence of the house.   Kitchen cabinets in a bold blue serve up appealing contrast in the home’s extended kitchen while classic lighting fixtures add style and warmth to the space. High ceilings and large windows throughout create a light, spacious feeling while moldings and millwork organize and humanize each room. The well-proportioned master suite with built-in wardrobes, coffered ceiling, and spa bath instill sophistication and serenity. The monochromatic color palette imbues cohesion and evokes a quiet ambiance. View more photos... TWELVE BUCOLIC ACRES on the Wye River set the stage for this magnificent estate. This major renovation of a late 19th century home tripled the historic home’s size and transformed the property into a stately family home. The existing historic structure was restored and sensitively renovated with modern amenities. Thrilling in its craftsmanship and architectural detailing, it is an exquisite work of art. Although grand in scale, the residence consists of a variety of thoughtfully proportioned spaces that are inviting and comfortable whether a casual family area or a more formal room. The living room with its fireplace and custom built-ins, the large open kitchen with island and reclaimed brick-floored butler’s pantry; the coffered ceiling hallway; a new one-story faceted sunroom; the master bedroom with vaulted ceiling; his and hers master bathrooms, and a screened porch with views of the river all make this place special for its owners and their guests. The home’s new entry sequence—a transportive drive, entry court, and welcoming front porch complete the vision of grace and ease.   HIDDEN AT THE END OF A ROAD, surrounded by native grasses, hydrangea, and wildflowers, this cheerful Caribbean-blue cottage is an enchanting tidewater home called “Open Air” by its owners. Designed for a couple ready to enjoy their retirement years, the home accommodates extended family entertaining as well as tranquil moments of solitary repose. A transitional house in two ways; the cottage was conceived for a simpler lifestyle and the iconic traditional exterior frames a more contemporary interior. An open plan and few stairs allow ease of flow while broad swaths of glazing flood the expansive spaces with light and capture the views. A sunlit cupola floods natural light into the main level, which supports the owners’ aging in place via an open floorplan, no long hallways and an elevator to the lower level. The ground floor offers its own allure, including a roomy bar, sitting area, and guest suite perfect for entertaining. The waterfront elevation also provides ample covered and sunlit seating, a firepit, and the pool deck for gathering and activity – all comfortably ensconced in the terraced landscaped hillside that eventually leads to the water’s edge. The plantation shutters, custom millwork, and oval windows lend charm and sophistication to this lovely place.   View more photographs in Interiors A CLEAR SENSE OF EASE and livability welcomes the owners, their three kids, pets, and visitors to this light-filled home. Whether arriving at the front door where an unexpected pattern of oversized leaves enlivens the entry and stair hall, or via the family mudroom, details abound that are both practical and sophisticated.   The Purple Cherry interior design studio joined the project team at just the right moment, allowing the team to guide the overall design direction from inception. Engaged communication and partnership with the owners and architect of record thus created a unified vision of stylish practicality in harmony with the Queen Anne architecture.   The scope of work comprising this beguiling environment brought wall coverings, calming color palates, tile and countertop selections, light fixtures, upholstery, and furnishings together to support an active family lifestyle and delight the eye. A clever design for temperature-controlled wine storage is built into the dining room making a passion convenient to share and enjoy. The bedrooms likewise are an appealing balance of design sensitivity and ingenuity. Texture, pattern, and geometry merge to enhance and personalize each space in the house. From the Tinta starburst pattern by Robert Allan Duralee for the blinds and drapes in the family/breakfast room to durable denim chair coverings, to custom built-ins and a considered place for everything, good taste and good sense are evident throughout.
